Today I went with Tricia to Miller’s Outdoor theater to watch traditional Filipino dancing. The theater is  one of my favorite places to be. It’s near the science museum, it has the perfect hill for rolling down/ice blocking down, and the shows are free. On a nice night you can lay back and just enjoy the stars during intermission. The toilets are clean.

(realizing we forgot a blanket to sit on, we sit on the grass. We look around, enviously making comments about the Filipino people around us who do have blankets, and picnic baskets as well. Then I feel an itch.)

Me: Say, do you think there are any chiggers here?

Tricia: Chig-? Jasmine, that is a racially offensive term. This was supposed to be a night about cultural awareness.

(watching as the Filipino men come out dancing)

Tricia: See! There’s all the cute single men I was talking about.

Me: …are they wearing coconut bras?

Tricia: Those are instruments. See? They’re slapping on them.

 Me: …now they’re slapping on each other’s coconut bras….

Tricia (pauses as she watches this): You’re just uncultured.
