a sad thing I write.

outside the vending machines
Javi is there.
pointing at all the things he wants
his mom indulging him
65 cents buying
another minute of happiness
Filling in a lifetime’s worth
in 4 short years

outside the door
a mom lies crying
one hand on the knob
Gustavo, gustavo, escucha a me
escucha a mami
she doesn’t stop
it seems for forever.
For her it is forever

Many more I know
Some final chapters written in love
the quiet closing of a book.
Some are broken
Children, who, despite having parents,
are orphans.
The guilt-ridden crying hurts my ears

at home
i take off my stethoscope
and my eyes fill up with years
